In these times of cuts and rising household bills, I don’t know anyone who isn’t looking to tighten up their spending and reduce their monthly outgoings, partly due to the cost of living but also future uncertainties such as the real threat of unemployment. But with cost-cutting measures there also needs to be a healthy consideration for planning for a worst case scenario.

The British are known to be pet lovers. Millions of pounds are spent each year buying, feeding and looking after our pets. I fondly remember having two dogs that were very much part of my childhood. Unlike most family pet dogs today, they lived outside in a home-built kennel that was large enough for me to climb into whenever I was in trouble or looking for a comforting cuddle of my best friend in the world!

Since leaving home and starting my own family, we have at different times had cats, dogs, hamsters, a rabbit and too many fish to count. My two boys are used to having animals around and more importantly caring for pets that show them love and trust in return for food and friendship.

Much has changed since I was a child and the cost of vet fees has increased dramatically along with the expectations we have for both the health of ourselves and our pets. It is therefore worth serious consideration as to what money you have set aside in case of a pet emergency.

What worse situation would there be for a pet owner to be unable to pay for veterinary treatment if something was to happen to a beloved pet or even worse the family pet? Imagine the stress and heartache of a guilty conscience if money hasn’t been put aside for life-saving treatment for a long-standing family dog or cat. Objectively it might not sound too hard a decision to make but generally speaking, when it comes to pets, people don’t think objectively.

The worst case scenario would be if you are currently struggling to survive on a wage when you get hit by a £500 + vet bill. What then?

There has been a rise in pet insurance in recent years, which goes hand-in-hand with the price of veterinary charges and the rising level of treatment expectancy owners now have for their animals, and many insurers now have a wide range of pet insurance policies to cover dogs, cats, rabbits and other common domestic pets.

Commonly pet insurance for dogs and cats comes in various levels of cover and includes veterinary fees, third party liability, accidental damage, death from injury, death from illness, cremation or burial costs, theft or straying, boarding fees, quarantine fees, and in some cases even advertising and reward costs for lost pets.
The first thing to consider when looking to save money is to look at your outgoings, but also look ahead and plan for the future.

One word of advice, when taking out a pet insurance policy, ensure that your pet has received the required vaccinations, as failure to comply with this will jeopardise your claim or cover.

A report from Sainsbury’s Finance claims that 30% of pets in the UK are overweight and at extreme risk of illness because of it. The study found that one in ten pets are severely overweight and that three in ten were above the recommended weight for their breed.

A similar poll of vets verified the findings, claiming that 40% of the animals taken to them were above normal weight.

Sainsbury’s Pet Insurance said around one in seven claims could be attributed to illnesses and conditions caused by a pet being overweight, including animal diabetes, heart diseases, and bone and ligament problems.

Lucy Hunter of Sainsbury’s Pet Insurance said:

“As is the case with humans, a lack of exercise and a poor diet, or overeating, is causing our pets’ weight to balloon. The saddest thing about this research is the fact that the pets are not to blame. A lot of animals will eat everything that is put in front of them so the onus is on the owner to monitor and restrict the amount of food that their pet is consuming.
Owners that do not look after their pets through poor diets and a lack of exercise increase the chances of their animals suffering serious health problems.”

The fact is of course that pets do not look after themselves. There are far to many lazy owners who do not exercise themselves let alone their pets and are content on overfeeding themselves, their siblings and their pets!

Under the proposed law changes owners will also be required to micro-chip their dogs and are considering plans to keep the most dangerous varieties muzzled-even in their own property as well as issuing ‘DOGBOs’, the canine equivalent of ‘ASBOS’ against dogs displaying signs of anti social behaviour.

Figures released by the Conservative party suggest that there are 100 people every week treated in hospital after being bitten by dogs.

In a survey by the Dog Trust it was found that the majority of dog owners questioned, 88%, would support such legislation.

Other measures being considered are an outright ban on some breeds of dog in the UK.

A survey by Allianz pet insurance arm PetPlan suggests that two thirds of us would choose not to start a family in the current economic situation, but a quarter would welcome having a pet instead.

In fairness the survey was conducted amongst 3000 pet owners but surprisingly the findings were equally expressed by both men and women. It seems that the pet industry is thriving in the UK with over £484million being spent by owners on their pets this year.

A spokeswoman from PetPlan, said: “It seems that pets of all shapes and sizes are now being considered a perfectly sensible alternative to starting a family for cash-strapped couples. We know that many owners develop very strong emotional ties to their pets that are often treated as part of the family. But we do urge all would-be pet owners to understand that pet ownership does come with responsibilities, just like parenthood.”

Research by accountancy firm Deloittes conducted by YouGov has shown a worrying trend amongst consumers in the insurance market, with many expecting to make cuts in insurance cover during the coming months.

Inflation and the downturn in the UK economy are forcing consumers to make unwelcome choices as to where they spend their hard earned cash and insurance policies will no doubt be hit hard.

The survey reveals that many respondents would be reducing their motor insurance from comprehensive cover to third party, in a bid to save cash on premiums, with as many as 26% expecting to cancel or reduce cover for Payment Protection policies.

Twelve percent of respondents would be looking for better deals on travel insurance and ten percent would make cut backs on health insurance. As a nation of pet lovers it’s no surprise that only 8% expected to make cut backs on pet insurance.

The consumer cut backs are predicted to cost the insurance industry somewhere around £1.5billion during this year.
