UK motorists who drink and drive are not only a menace to other road users and pedestrians, but also to themselves, as research shows that drivers convicted of drink driving will face increased insurance premiums of up to twice the normal figure, if they can obtain insurance at all.
According to research by Moneysupermarket.com motorists who have been banned from driving during the last five years will find that many insurers will refuse to offer them cover, while those that do will hike the premium by as much as double.
The study was conducted following a report from the Co-operative insurance which found that an alarming 55% of young motorists drive while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. As the run up to the Christmas party season approaches Moneysupermarket.com remind drivers to consider the risks that come with drink driving as well as the financial cost.
“It is not only the risk to your own safety that needs consideration, but a second thought must be paid to others around you, pedestrians and road users alike,” warns Moneysupermarket’s Steve Sweeny.
