A senior police officer has warned the UK public over the growing number of fraudulent burglary claims, the latest insurance scam where people are pretending that they have been burgled with the aim of collecting money from their insurance policies.
Chief Constable Julie Spence suggests that the recent increase in fraudulent burglary claims is possibly linked to the economic recession, but has warned would be scammers of the seriousness of the crime.
The scammers work on the principle that the police will be too busy to visit the scene of crime, in the past insurance companies have been paying out for stolen items on production of a crime number given to the claimant when the burglary is reported. But Spence says that the police response has changed.
“We investigate every burglary. That is our policy. We are moving back to attending scenes of crime. The problem is that it takes as long an investigation to prove that a crime didn’t happen as it does to prove that one did happen.”
