Icy weather costs motor insurers £63million

John Williams - Monday 16.02.09, 15:06pm

Estimates from Sainsbury’s Car Insurance say that the UK’s heaviest snowfall in twenty years will result in over 45,000 claims, costing insurers a mammoth £63million in pay-outs.

During the week that saw much of the UK covered in snow, claims were up by 45%, compared to the same week in 2008, causing Sainsbury’s to comment that it is one of the busiest times they can remember for car insurance claims.

While drivers were as usual urged to stay at home and not make unnecessary journeys, many of those that did venture out on the roads appear to have paid dearly for it.
