Insurers are bracing themselves for a deluge of claims resulting from the Heathrow Terminal 5 chaos. If you are travelling this week from T5, it is worth inspecting your travel policy as monetary limits vary depending on your insurer.
While airlines are obliged to offer refreshments after 12 hours delay the limit is just £20 per person, which won’t buy much at airport prices.
Some insurances will allow you to cancel your flight after a delay of 24 hours and give full reimbursement of flight, hotel car hire and any other expenses incurred, but this is not necessarily the norm, so it may be worth paying that bit more under the circumstances for peace of mind.
Luggage caught up in the T5 debacle is considered delayed rather than lost and an insurance policy would therefore only cover emergency items that you need to buy. Again the amount you can claim does vary a great deal from policy to policy.
The Airline is of course responsible as well, but with the huge problems facing Heathrow do not expect anything to happen very quickly.
