Allianz Insurance has become the first company to penalise drivers with a conviction for driving while using a mobile phone, hiking premiums for offenders by a third.
It is thought that other insurers will follow the lead of Allianz as they are forced to help the government and police clamp down.
The seriousness of the offence was reflected in February’s legislation to increase the conviction to carry an increased fine and three points on your licence. Allianz now considers this offence on the same level as a careless driving conviction.
Neil Walker, motor manager for Allianz, says: ‘By increasing the premiums for drivers with mobile phone convictions we are reinforcing the fact that this is a dangerous and needless act. ‘
