Detected fraudulent motor insurance claims have risen by 70% in the last three years, with an amazing 24,000 fraudulent claims uncovered in last year alone.
The Association Of British Insurers (ABI) say that during last year detected fraud amounted to over a quarter of a billion pounds, or £5million per week.
Successfully prosecuted claims include a Rolls Royce owner who removed items from his car before claiming to have had them stolen. The claim was for £10,000. Another claimant was found to have pushed his car over a cliff, wanting the insurance payout to pay off their HP finance, and in another case a woman deliberately drove her Land Rover into her house after an argument with her partner, and then claimed that it was an accident.
The ABI warns that motor insurance fraud is currently costing honest motorists an extra £40 per year.
I just wonder how many claims are going through that are not detected. This is a serious offence that is costing the honest motorist money. It worries me how insurance fraud has become such a massive thing, not just on motor insurance but throughout the insurance industry in general.
