New law to help clampdown on uninsured drivers

John Williams - Wednesday 21.01.09, 12:56pm

The government minister for Road Safety has announced plans make it an offence to keep an uninsured vehicle, with similar penalties as driving without insurance. The new system will work in partnership with the DVLA and insurers to identify uninsured vehicles.

The minister Jim Fitzpatrick, blames the selfish minority, who refuse to insure their vehicles, for increasing premiums for law abiding drivers and suggests that uninsured drivers are responsible for a high proportion of accidents and road deaths. He supports that argument with latest figures that uninsured and untraceable drivers kill 160 people and injure 23,000 each year.

Vehicle owners found to have no insurance will be given a period in which to get cover for the vehicle or face a £100 fine. Vehicles that remain uninsured may be seized and destroyed, even if the fine has been paid.

Am I alone in believing that this same law has been in force for several years, and still it is not solving the problem.
