Norwich Union has withdrawn it’s ‘Pay As You Drive’ policy that was launched in 2006, aimed specifically at younger drivers who are on the road between 11pm and 6am.
The scheme recognised the statistics that almost half the people killed on the road at night are under 24 years old. Those same statistics also meant that the scheme was expensive, costing around £1 per mile, one of the factors in why the scheme has been suspended due to low sales.
The main reason it was not taken up by many, say insurance experts, was that policy holders vehicles were fitted with global positioning devices which tracked every journey taken and could give motorists a sense of being under surveillance.
