The Association Of British Insurers (ABI) have suggested that almost one in ten insurance claims in the UK are fraudulent, adding an estimated £40 a year to the average premium.
To back up the claim, a survey by Moneysupermarket.com, found that two thirds of people would consider lying to their insurer if they had failed to secure their car securely and it was stolen.
Telling a white lie or holding back the whole truth may not be cause for concern, says Moneysupermarket.com, “But if the claim is a result of your wrong doing, insurers will see it as fraudulent.”
They warn that not only could the insurer refuse cover, but you could also be reported to the police.
Through data sharing, other insurers are aware of fraudulent claims, making it difficult to obtain cover with another company.
