Over One Million Admit To Driving Without Insurance

John Williams - Tuesday 13.05.08, 11:16am

A report from Sainsbury’s Car Insurance says that 1.15million UK motorists have driven with no insurance cover during the last twelve months.

Not surprisingly 17-24 year old drivers made up 40% of those commiting the crime of driving whilst uninsured, according to the survey.

The Motor Insurers’ Bureau claim that uninsured drivers are costing law abiding motorists around £30 on their annual premium, or in excess of £500million each year overall.

Insurance Groups have already hit out at the justice system that issues an average fine of £140 for the serious crime of driving with no insurance, making it a fair gamble for many motorists to take.

Obviously small fines are not a deterrent and being banned from driving hardly makes any difference to these people as they will continue to drive and commit the same offence time and again.

More drastic action is obviously required, but just what is anybody’s guess!
