Police in the South West of England and Wales mounted ‘Operation Utah’ last week, using the Motor Insurers’ Bureau database (MID) to target a crackdown on uninsured vehicles.
The successful operation ran for five days utilising two hundred police officers using APNR technology, which scans vehicle registration plates and matches them to the database.
Over 900 vehicles were stopped and 156 cars were seized, resulting in 58 arrests. While searching stopped vehicles the police found several supplies of class A drugs, along with weapons and ammunition including a rocket launcher.
The MID has proved to be a major asset in the police crackdown on uninsured vehicles and results from the database mean that police seize one vehicle every three minutes.
