Sunshine after the rain for French holidaymakers

John Williams - Tuesday 14.07.09, 17:11pm

French travel agents are offering clients optional insurance cover for unwanted interuptions to the weather. The insurance policy is available through holiday groups Pierre et Vacances and FranceLoc and underwritten by AoN France.

Aimed at sun seeking holidaymakers, the policy will allow a client to claim back part of their holiday costs if they experience at least four days rain in any week.

Aon France will use satellite photos obtained by the French weather bureau to calculate how much money subscribers should receive. Compensation can be worth up to 400 euros and policyholders will be notified by phone, text message or e mail before they arrive home from their holidays, with a cheque arriving a few days later.

The brains behind the idea is Herv Kayser, who says that in a trial run last year 10% of those interested in the policy witnessed enough rain to receive money back on their holiday.
