Claims for theft will rise by 100% in 2009 says the insurance company Hiscox, on the back of warnings from the government’s Home Secretary that burglaries are on the rise.
As unemployment hits new highs and the economic depression bites, the insurer warns that theft will become a major problem for homeowners in the UK. And whats more most homeowners have more to lose than ever before. Because of the general rise in prosperity over recent years the ‘consumer culture’ that has swamped the UK means that the average home has three times more portable valuables than a decade ago.
The average household contents have risen by 20% over the last five years.
“The 2009 home contains a treasure trove of valuables for thieves. British homeowners have been in accumulation mode for the past decade.” says Steve Langan of Hiscox UK.
