Statistics from the Association of British Insurers (ABI) show an alarming rise in the number of fire claims over the two year period between the first half of 2007 to the first half of 2009.
Worringly a growing number of the claims are being contributed to arson and insurance company Aviva has warned businesses to be on the alert to the ‘opportunist nature of most attacks’.
Aviva have seen an increasing number of arson claims during the two year period and report that over 40% of all fires in industry and commerce are started deliberately.
Business owners are being warned to take the threat of arson seriously and to do everything in their power to minimize fire risk. One of the most common causes of arson is through waste storage and wheelie bins left outside of commercial properties.
Unoccupied buildings are also a prime target for arsonists and owners are being told to make sure that any such property is properly secured and that rubbish is cleared form around the building.
For occupied commercial premises it is prudent to have sprinkler systems checked on a regular basis as it is proven that 99% of fires are controlled in buildings protected by sprinklers.
