a clamp, a key, and a licence to print money
Research from motor insurer LV= reveals that the number of drivers who have had their vehicles clamped in the last year has risen by 64% on the same period in the previous twelve months.
While the legality of Private Clamping firms is currently in dispute, municipal clampers employed by local authorities are legal and represent a massive income for the councils.
Local councils make an estimated £21 million from the business of clamping illegally parked vehicles, but it is believed that the business is worth around £58million to private clampers.
The number of cars being clamped during the last twelve months reached epic proportions at 486,705 a massive rise from the previous twelve months when the figure was 292,023, suggesting that clamping has become the latest big thing for scammers to get involved in.
John O’Roarke, LV= car insurance MD, has called on the government to regulate the private clampers and described the fines imposed by such firms as unreasonable and extortionate.
