Regardless of pre-conceptions, recent research from insurance company MoreThan has found that the safest city to leave a bicycle unsecured is Liverpool. MoreThan discovered that it took four hours before a brand new unguarded bicycle was taken in the north west city of Liverpool, against a national average of 2 hours and 22 minutes.
In fact it is the capital city of the UK, London that came out worst in the survey, where the bicycle was stolen within 17 minutes of it being left unattended. The leader of the Conservative party, David Cameron will not need to read the survey to know, he has had two bicycles stolen in the capital in the last ten months, the most recent being in May this year.
In Birmingham it took 1 hour and 55 minutes for the bike to disappear, while Manchester thieves waited for 3 hours and 10 minutes.
