In a recent AA survey of motorists in the UK one in nine drivers admitted that they would drive away rather than owning up to damaging another vehicle in a car park.
Four out of five drivers polled claimed that their vehicles had been damaged while parked and the AA say that they have seen an increase in claims for parked car damage of 10% since the start of the year.
Claims for damage caused to vehicles while they are parked stand at 3.4million in the first six months of 2009, but the AA suggest that the real number of cars involved in ‘car park hit and run’ incidents is much higher, but because it would affect their no claim bonus many people do not bother to claim unless they see the incident and can claim against the other driver.
Without witnessing an incident and having no knowledge of how the damage occurred, many motorists are still loathe to make a claim, because of losing no claim bonus or the damage being less than the excess on their motor insurance.
